Non-Emergent COVID 19 Repetitive Transports

Posted on May 20, 2020March 28, 2021 by Dave Pickren

We have received several phone calls from Non-Emergent EMS services where the Dialysis center or the Doctors office has requested ambulance transport for a patient that does not meet medical necessity but has COVID 19 and needs to be transported via ambulance to remain quarantined.

We contacted Medicare, and as of right now, the patient MUST meet medical necessity as usual. When asked who will take these patients if no one can take them, Medicare responded with, “we don’t know, but they have to meet medical necessity for ambulance transport.” We will continue to ask questions and keep you informed.

If you have an established nursing home willing to pay or a dialysis center willing to pay, please notify us first and get all the necessary documentation such as PCS and medical records explicitly saying the patient has COVID 19. Right now, we are looking at these on a case-by-case basis.

-Thank You
